I decided to go out of my comfort zone and do this using the grisaille approach, common in traditional oil painting, instead of painting alla prima which I am most comfortable with. I laid down the first layer with a greenish blue tone, and then added the warmer tones, the oranges and the reds. The superposition of warm over cool tones, although it works differently than with opaque paints such as acrylics or oils, seems to have created an interesting effect.
